The Exponential Roadmap identified climate leadership from business as one of four exponential levers to scale the transformation. Our 1.5°C Business Playbook provides a framework for assuming this leadership: It is a handbook for business leaders and employees in companies and organisations of all sizes and sectors who want to align with the 1.5°C ambition through concrete action. The Business Playbook focuses on simplicity and speed, setting out the four pillars of climate action that need to be included in companies’ business strategies.
Our resources support specific aspects of the wider business transformation or of individual pillars, such as value chain emissions.
Business transformation
Climate change is a business risk. But companies that embrace transformative change have an opportunity to win in the new, clean economy. Our resources help integrate climate into business strategies and transform business to be fit for a net zero emissions world.
PILLAR 1 - REDUCE YOUR OWN EMISSIONS
Pillar 1 focuses on the activities a company undertakes to reduce its own emissions. It includes planning and taking action to reduce own emissions from facilities, vehicles, production processes, electricity, steam, cooling and heating (scope 1 and 2).

PILLAR 2 - REDUCE YOUR VALUE CHAIN EMISSIONS
Pillar 2 focuses on the activities a company undertakes to reduce its value chain emissions. Value chain emissions (scope 3) include emissions from upstream and downstream activities.
The 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders is an ERI-convened initiative driving climate action throughout global supply chains. The SME Climate Hub is an initiative co-founded by ERI, empowering small to medium-sized companies to take climate action.
PILLAR 3 - PROVIDE AND SCALE SOLUTIONS
Pillar 3 focuses on the company’s impact in society through the use of its products and services. It expands efforts beyond reducing the company’s footprint to providing solutions.
PILLAR 4 - ACCELERATE CLIMATE ACTION IN SOCIETY
Pillar 4 describes how to contribute to the 1.5°C and net zero ambition beyond the company’s own business and value chain, eg by influencing policies and engaging industry associations to accelerate climate action or by making climate and nature contributions beyond the value chain.
