The science is clear on three things. First, globally, greenhouse gas emissions need to halve by 2030 to reach net zero by 2050. Second, this remains just about an achievable goal. And finally, the world is way off track.
Change is coming through a massive mobilization of non-state actors. Up to this point 5,235 businesses, 1,049 cities, 67 regions, 441 of the biggest investors, and 1,039 higher education institutions have all committed to reaching net zero before 2050 through the UN Race to Zero initiative. This represents a significant part of the global GDP. Now it is time to reach their supply chains.
We, the 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders in the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, have set targets and are taking action to cut our own emissions by at least 50% by 2030 as outlined in the 1.5°C Business Playbook. But we recognize that we need to go beyond our own operation and contribute to the global transformation towards net-zero. For that reason:
- We encourage our key suppliers to halve their greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 towards net-zero.
- We are accelerating the integration of climate related performance into our procurement processes.
- We are sharing our best practices openly, e.g. compiled in the Supplier Engagement Guide, which includes templates and examples which other companies can replicate.
- We support SMEs globally through the SME Climate Hub and will encourage our small and medium sized suppliers and customers to join us in the climate journey.
Together, we represent over USD $440 billion in annual revenue*. We influence millions of suppliers. Climate targets and actions in line with science are expected to become the new business as usual to stay competitive and to stay in business.
The 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders now encourage all companies and suppliers to do the same – to gain a competitive advantage, and to contribute to the 1.5°C ambition. We know it is a massive effort, we know it has to be done, we know it is achievable and it has to be done together. We Can Do It.

The 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders
The 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders work together to drive climate action throughout global supply chains, and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the SME Climate Hub, understanding the need to work with and support suppliers to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net zero emissions before 2050.
The 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders was founded by the Exponential Roadmap Initiative together with Ericsson, Inter IKEA Group, Telia Company, BT Group and Unilever, and is supported by the United Nations’ Race to Zero and the We Mean Business Coalition.
The SME Climate Hub
The SME Climate Hub is a global initiative that empowers small to medium sized companies to take climate action and build resilient businesses for the future. The Hub is an initiative of the We Mean Business Coalition, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative and the United Nations Race to Zero campaign in collaboration with Normative and the Net Zero team at Oxford University.
UNFCCC Race to Zero
Race To Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. It mobilizes a coalition of leading net-zero initiatives, representing 11,309 non-State actors including 8,307 companies, 595 financial institutions, 1,136 cities, 52 states and regions, 1,125 educational institutions and 65 healthcare institutions (as of September 2022).
