Exponential Roadmap Initiative, Rethinking Removals, Race to Zero, and Oxford Net Zero launches the Carbon Removals Action Guide. The guide provides practical steps for companies to integrate removals into credible, science-based net zero strategies, outlining six key actions for doing so.
Companies committed to net zero have also committed to balancing all remaining emissions with carbon removals that offer durable storage. But if investments in removals only happen after all reductions are achieved, it will be too late. To ensure both technical and nature-based solutions are ready and scaled when needed, investment must start now. Early action is also the most reliable way to prepare for emerging regulatory and compliance requirements.
The guide introduces the concept of twin trajectories: companies should set and move forward on a removals pathway alongside their emissions reduction pathway. It outlines six key actions, offering options rather than prescriptions, recognising that discussion on the details continues across multiple forums. The guide also emphasises the importance of investing in removals portfolios now to ensure solutions are ready at scale to address residual emissions.
As Johan Falk, co-founder and CEO of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, puts it:
We introduced the principles for carbon removals in the Exponential Business Playbook earlier this year, and the strong response showed that companies are ready to engage. This guide is the natural next step – helping businesses turn principles into practice, while ensuring removals can scale and attract the funding needed to improve.”
The guide details six key actions for businesses: from estimating residual emissions and aligning with science-based principles, to developing procurement and due diligence processes and engaging stakeholders.
Gabrielle Walker, co-founder of Rethinking Removals, adds:
It started as a conversation with ERI, on top of a mountain in the rain, about what companies really need to do on carbon removals. We agreed there’s no shortage of ambition, but a lack of clarity. Businesses want to know how to act credibly, align removals with their climate strategies, and move from pledges to progress. That exchange sparked this new guide, offering clear and practical direction for integrating carbon removals into corporate climate action. Developed together, it combines scientific integrity with real business needs. Because the next phase of climate leadership isn’t just about setting targets — it’s about integrating carbon removals into the heart of corporate climate action.
