In brief

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative (ERI) is a collaborative climate initiative uniting companies that are innovators, disruptors and transformers to drive exponential action to halve emissions by 2030. The initiative is an accredited partner of the Race to Zero, led by the High-Level Climate Champions.

We support leading companies to take radical climate action across four pillars: 1) reducing own emissions; 2) reducing value chain emissions; 3) providing and scaling climate solutions; and 4) accelerating action in society. Our Climate Performance Review (CPR) assesses whether a company meets our criteria for membership.  It is also a valuable tool, allowing companies to identify key gaps and opportunities. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that do not qualify as climate solutions companies can commit to halving emissions by 2030 via the SME Climate Hub, which offers free tools and resources tailored for these enterprises.

We work with our members, eg the 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders, to transform business models and develop and share best practices. We provide open-source tools and resources that are regularly updated to reflect evolving best practice. And we influence standards and frameworks with the aim to advance integrity and to provide thought leadership for credible corporate climate action.

Our story

Climate solutions

Because scaling climate solutions enables us to shift away from the fossil economy, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative together with Oxford Net Zero launches a Climate Solutions Framework to incentivise companies to develop portfolios that move towards climate solutions. The framework builds on an earlier discussion paper and incorporates feedback from a consultation.

Climate transition plans for business transformation

Heeding the call from the UN Secretary-General, Exponential Roadmap Initiative supported 10 companies in developing climate transition plans aligned with the recommendations of the Secretary-General’s High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) for net zero commitments. Building on this work, in 2024, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative launched guidance on climate transition plans, empowering companies to turn long-term transformational targets into a step-by-step roadmap for creating sustainable change.

Action Guides

Exponential Roadmap Initiative develops Action Guides to support companies in implementing the actions recommended in the 1.5°C Business Playbook.  Starting with the Supplier Action Guide, the guides’ library come to include the Transportation Action Guide, the Circular Action Guide, the Greening Cash Action Guide and the Business Associations Climate Action Guide. The 1.5°C Supplier Engagement Guide is a collaborative online platform launched in 2024 by the 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders; it is hosted by BSR.

Climate Performance Review

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative launches its enhanced and more stringent Climate Performance Review to ensure member companies’ actions are aligned with the Race to Zero criteria 3.0.

1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders

Exponential Roadmap Initiative together with Ericsson, IKEA, Telia Company, BT Group and Unilever and supported by the We Mean Business Coalition and the International Chamber of Commerce launches the 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders , a group of leading companies working together to drive climate action throughout global supply chains and SMEs through the SME Climate Hub

Partner in the Race to Zero

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative becomes an accredited partner of the Race to Zero campaign, which is led by the High-Level Climate Champions and the world’s largest coalition of non-state actors taking immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030. Businesses can now join the Race to Zero by becoming members of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative.

SME Climate Hub

The Exponential Roadmap Initiative and the We Mean Business Coalition (WMB), supported by their software partner, Normative, launch the SME Climate Hub, which enables small and medium-sized companies to understand their emissions, make a commitment aligned with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions’ Race to Zero, take action and report their progress on climate action.

1.5°C Business Playbook

The 1.5°C Business Playbook makes the insights of the Exponential Roadmap report actionable for companies. Launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos by Johan Rockström and Christiana Figueres, the Playbook helps companies and organisations of all sizes set a 1.5°C-aligned strategy and begin to act.

Exponential Roadmap 1.5

In 2019, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative under the leadership of Johan Falk and Owen Gaffney produces a substantial iteration of the Exponential Roadmap, Exponential Roadmap 1.5.

Exponential Roadmap report

The first Exponential Roadmap, lead-authored by Johan Falk and Owen Gaffney, was launched at the Global Climate Action Summit by leading climate scientist Johan Rockström and Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It is the first global roadmap highlighting that there are solutions which can halve emissions by 2030 and that they need to be scaled exponentially via four forces: climate leadership, strong policy, finance and technology.

The Carbon Law

The Carbon Law is a global roadmap based on a simple heuristic of halving global carbon dioxide emissions every decade, with the first halving between 2020 and 2030, to lead to net zero emissions by 2050. The Carbon Law was set out in a Science Magazine article written by Johan Rockström and Owen Gaffney et al.
